Learn What You Need To Know About Getting A Hard Drive
May 23 '00
Hello, I have had much experience with computers and have personally gone through about 18 hard drives in 3 yrs. I did not mess up these hard drives I just found that I needed to upgrade. In this opinion you will learn what you need when buying a hard drive.
Size
If you are interested in a large hard drive you should consider a 20-26 gigabyte hard drive. I will tell you later why you do not want a 30+ gigabyte hard drive. But first, What is a gigabyte? A gigabyte is 1000 megabytes. A megabyte is 1000 kilobytes and so on. What this all means is that for 1 gigabyte you can not store very much. An operating system (win 98), some games, and a word processor (word 2000). Maybe? So you want a 10 gigabyte hard drive at the very minimum. I would recommend a 22 gigabyte.
Speed
Now that you know how many gigabytes you want, you can consentrate on other things. There are a few speeds available for hard drives. 5400 rpm(rotations per minute), 7200 rpm, 11200 rpm. You will probably not buy a hard drive with 11200 rpm only because it is in a different formatt called scsi and if you know anything about that, it costs a lot more money. So what you probably want is 7200 rpm. You can really tell the difference and overall will be very pleased. The reason you do not want a 40 gigabyte hard drive is because there is so much room that even if it is a 7200rpm hard drive it will not make a difference, it will still be slow. So if you need that much room you should just double up two 20 gigabyte 7200 rpm hard drives. It would be a lot faster. In fact as fast as you would ever need.
Brand
Choosing a brand is important becasue what happens when your hard drives dies for whatever reason, or it becomes surged, meaning that it is burned out? Nothing if you have some no name or house brand drive, but with MAXTOR or WESTERN DIGITAL you will have the drive replaced free of charge.
Now that you know everything you need to know, you should look to spend about $200 at most if you can get a 20 gig Western Digital with 7200rpm at $150 then you really did a good job.
This epinion was intended on informing you with what you need to know. If you are not satisfied with this epinion, it is my opinion so there is really nothing I can do. Thank you for taking the time to read this and good luck.
