New Category Lead Update!

We are very excited to welcome our new Category Leads DrFaustus, Pestyside, and Gr8ful!
DrFaustus will join Lambchops as a Category Lead in Music. We want to thank Bob_tomato for all of his hard work during his time as a Category Lead in Music.
Pestyside will join both Panguitch and Arianej to lead the Books Category.
Pearannoyed did a wonderful job during her tenure as Category Lead for Books and we thank her.
Lastly, Gr8ful will join OpalMan in leading the Computer Hardware, Business & Technology and Software Categories. Kudos to Nc10 for all of his time and hard work as a Category Lead in all of those categories.

The big news with this release is the ability to toggle the new review editor (WYSIWYG) on/off. We've also included a bunch of fixes to the editor as well as some other site features. Please note that dates are subject to change.

- Changed the text of content filter on profile pages
- Changed wording on "greyed out" reviews

There have been a number of staffing changes here at Epinions that we want to make sure everyone is aware of. We have some departures to announce, and also some new folks to introduce. And even one former Epinions staffer to re-introduce!
Pehr Luedtke, who led our Epinions team for the past year and a half, left the company in pursuit of new adventures. We want to thank Pehr for all of his hard work and contributions to the site.
Alisa Weiner is the new General Manager of Epinions and also the Vice President of Online Comparison Shopping. Alisa oversees all business operations for the Shopping.com, DealTime and Epinions comparison shopping sites, including strategy, product development, internet and consumer marketing, and business analytics. Some of you may have met her at the Chicago Meet-and-Greet. Alisa joined Shopping.com in 2006 and has been an Epinions member since 2000. She is a very active online shopper and relies heavily on all of your reviews to help her make smart purchasing decisions.
We also want to let you know that Almar Reyes will be leaving the company at the end of the month. Most of you have had the pleasure to communicate and interact with Almar and know that he is very passionate about the community. We wish him well and thank him for all of his hard work and dedication to the site.
The community is our primary focus, so we are extremely happy to announce the return of Christal Calderon, who is re-joining the Epinions team as the Epinions Community Manager. As you all know Christal is an original Epinions employee from way back in 2000. She took a break for a year to venture off and do other things, but is happy to be back working with the Epinions Community.
Finally, we wanted to let you know that Richard Ault has joined Shopping.com as the new Director of Product. In this role, Richard will be responsible for the End-to-End user experience and all aspects of product strategy and product management across our Shopping.com, DealTime and Epinions web sites globally. Richard has worked at several other start-ups including CNET, Napster, and Technorati. He joins our company with a deep understanding of consumer reviews and user-generated content.

We've released some updates to the site and we'd like to call out the following features:
New Content Editor
There's a new WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") editor on the review and essay forms. We believe this will make it easier for everyone to submit
reviews. There are a few features and changes in this editor that we wanted to call out specifically:
- Use the "HTML" button to edit the HTML tags of your review.
- Use the "Word" button when pasting your review from Microsoft Word.
- The spell checking functionality is now built directly into the editor, so don't forget to use the spell checker!
- HTML will no longer be allowed in the title of your review from this point forward.
Message Boards
Additionally, we've added the poster's name to the last reply column of the message boards. This feature is only available at the topic level.

Summer is almost over but the August 10 for 10 is just starting! The same rules and criteria from last month still apply:
In addition to the $10 for every 10 reviews you write, you can earn an additional $10 for every 10 reviews that have a 'very helpful' rating. Write 10 'very helpful' reviews and earn $20! Write 50 'very helpful' reviews and earn $100! So for this month, earn up to $200 writing reviews for Epinions! There is no submission process necessary. Just write and you're automatically entered!
The August 10 for 10 is separate from the previous month. Your review count starts from zero.

On Wednesday, July 16th, we were scheduled to migrate the Media Categories to the Shopping.com catalog. We were unable to complete the transition and we were required to put the site into "read-only" mode yesterday evening. As a result, any changes or updates made to reviews yesterday between 3pm and 6pm PT may have been lost. The migration has been postponed and a new date for the migration has not been scheduled at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

In an effort to communicate more about what is happening on the site, the Epinions Community Care team will begin sharing site updates right here in the Message Center. Here are the latest updates:
June Hits, MPA/MPA, TER
While Income Share for June has been paid out the visit counts are not up to date. We've encountered some delays in updating the hits for June. This has delayed the updates to MPR/MPA/TER. We hope to have everything completed before the end of the week.
Media Category Migration
On Wednesday, July 16th, we are going to migrate the Media Categories (Books, Music, Video & DVDs) to the Shopping.com catalog. You may experience intermittent issues in the Media Category between 3pm and 5pm PT on Wednesday, July 16th. This update does not include Movies in Theaters as this is an Epinions only category (i.e. it's not shown on Shopping.com today). We will work on Movies in Theaters later this year. SAP in Media will be live on July 23rd. That means that all reviews in these categories will start using the /review/ format. The problems associated with this url format will be resolved by the end of this week. Products added via SAP will be in Search.
As a result of this migration, a small number of reviews will not be mapped corrrectly to products. These reviews, however, will still be accessible to the author, community, and shopper. You will see the "Category/Vertical not found" message in your profile pages. We plan to create many of the unmapped products using the Suggest A Product feature, which will be accessible after July 23rd. Please do not take action on the unmapped reviews at this time. The unmapped reviews associated with the new products will be mapped by us. Following the Media migration, our goal is to quickly migrate the remaining categories to ensure system/catalog stability going into the shopping season.

I would like to follow Andy's post with some of my own reflections. There's no doubt about it - this is a sad day for Epinions, the team, and for me personally. Andy is a special person - his commitment to Epinions is unwavering, his passion for our community is deep, and his contributions to our team here in Brisbane are powerful. We have been lucky to have him for 8 years. (As context, a gallon of gas when Andy started was $1.83.) We will all miss Andy.
One of the great things about working in Silicon Valley is the access to great talent; one of the downsides is that other companies grab great talent. This has now happened quickly with Andy and Garrett. We are working swiftly to hire, and I am committed to getting the right people on the Community Care team. In the meantime, I ask for your support and patience. There may be things that we forget to do; there may be balls that will be dropped. When that happens, let us know - and we'll work hard to fix it. I promise you that.

Dear Epinions Community,
Today I must announce that I am moving on from my role at Shopping.com and Epinions. My experience writing and working with this community over the past 8 years has been one of the most rewarding of my life. I am grateful to all of you for helping make Epinions great. It has truly been a wonderful time in my career to serve you. Now is the time for me to move on, however, and tackle different challenges. Wednesday, May 7th, is my last day with the company and in June I will be starting a new position with an exciting startup in San Francisco.
You probably know that we already have some open positions on the Community Care team following Garrett’s departure, and we are working swiftly to hire. In the short term we will rely on our CLs, Pehr, Almar, and the Engineering staff to carry the community through this transition. Please offer them your support, your patience, your knowledge, and all the help you can. Almar should be your primary contact for the time being: almar@shopping.com. Almar is a seasoned community veteran and I know you'll find him a great guy to work with. And of course, you can also contact Pehr (pluedtke@shopping.com) anytime.
I was writing for Epinions for many months before I worked here, and I intend to keep writing. You will see me around and I’ll be helping the staff as much as I can from the sidelines. I’ll be taking a much-needed vacation for about a month, during which I won’t be available, but I am already looking forward to coming back and seeing you all on the site.

Farewell Garrett!

Dear Community Members,
It's with much gratitude and more than a little sadness that I announce Garrett Gonzales is moving on from his role at Epinions.com. Garrett's last day with the company will be this Friday, April 11th.
Garrett started at Epinions just about 8 years ago and has contributed tremendous strength, guidance, and support to the Epinions staff and community in his time here. Garrett has been like a rock through the good and the bad, and has in no small part helped make Epinions one of the most successful communities on the web. We all have fond memories of Garrett helping us through one tough situation or another, and we will all miss him terribly. As he turns to the next chapter in his career, we send him off with gratitude and affection.
I am happy to announce, however, that Garrett has earned a hat! User roheblius will stay involved with the community as a message board moderator. I ask you all to keep in mind that Garrett will not be an employee in this capacity and it will be important not to lean on him more than you would any other community member. You should consider me your primary point of contact and always use our bug and abuse forms to report site issues.
I know many of you will want to give Garrett a shout out. We’ve opened this message boards thread for everyone.

The great work on the 10 for 10 continues, therefore, the 10 for 10 continues through March as well! The rules and criteria from February still apply:
In addition to the $10 for every 10 reviews you write, you can earn an additional $10 for every 10 reviews that have a 'very helpful' rating. Write 10 'very helpful' reviews and earn $20! Write 50 'very helpful' reviews and earn $100! So for this month, earn up to $200 writing reviews for Epinions! There is no submission process necessary. Just write and you're automatically entered!
As with February's 10 for 10, this one is completely separate from last month, so you'll be starting from scratch again.

We were recently informed that some members may have experienced difficulty with their RSVPs to the 2008 Southern California Meet and Greet next month. If you have indicated you are attending the Meet and Greet but have not received a response directly from us, please send your RSVP again. As a result, we've extended the RSVP deadline to this Wednesday, February 27, 2008.

Southern California Meet And Greet 2008

After a long hiatus, the Meet And Greet is back for 2008 and we're coming to Southern California! The Meet And Greet format is changing a bit this year. In an effort to provide more information to our members, we're including an Information Session prior to dinner. This is your chance to learn more about Epinions and to interact with members of the Epinions staff.
Here are the details:
Location: The Westin South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa
686 Anton Boulevard
Costa Mesa, California 92626
Date: Saturday, March 8, 2008
Time: Information session from 3:30-5:00 PM PT; appetizers, cocktails, and dinner from 5:30-9:30 PM PT
Cost: Free! Epinions members may also bring their spouse to cocktails and dinner.
Food: Hot hors d'oeuvres with cocktails, beer, wine, and soda bar, followed by dinner.
RSVP: Please send an email to RSVP if you plan on attending. All Epinions members and guests must RSVP by Wednesday, February 20, 2008. More detailed information will follow in the weeks to come.
