My hurried response was to Rex after he noted what he thought you were talking of. The fact is, in reading your post, you talked of two issues. I addressed the latter.

I believe that and I don't believe Epinions is a social club, it does however provide a place for people to ask questions and now another for those who like to talk to each other, if they like, on most any subject.
That said, perhaps a few "lurk" looking for answers to questions they are too shy to ask of themselves. I also believe some lurkers are waiting to join in at some time when they feel the time right. I can name (but won't) a few active members on the boards now that did lurk for a while and found it difficult to broadcast their first few words here yet, are now fixtures. It's like that in many and, I would venture to say, most pubic and private coterie.

That was me, but now I consider myself a regular here and when a discussion comes up that I can contribute too I do so without hesitation...and, when there's a thread I'm not comfortable with or does apply to me for one reason or another I just don't comment.
I have found the board to be very helpful to me and has helped me to utilize the site better, by understanding some of the promotions better and I feel a stronger ccommitment to the community of epinions.
I've read so many posts where people are so helpful to others whether newbies or not, never the reverse.
But Cindy is right about oldtimers not contributing much to the board for various reasons, I was one of them until last year, yet somehow I think they are many of the lurkers....:)
though that Kool-aid thing escapes me unless its an insult in reference Jonestown and being a follower of some sort..I hope I'm wrong.
I especially appreciate the board more now that the staff comes here to post updates and information.

I have seen it used (and used it) in both a positive and a negative sense.
Though the 'positive' sense has a negative tinge to it as in sports teams fans (followers) thinking their team is the best in the world.
(Besides, as someone always points out in these intertube threads, it was whatever** at Jonestown, not Kool-Aid...)

Ditto that thought.
...tom...
** It was Flavor-Aid that done the deed, from a quick-n-dirty Google search...

RE:
Just happens that the Jonestown 30th anniversary was on the 15th. I wrote a piece here in reference to it a few years back, June '06. A girl from my high school was a victim and unfortunately, it seems became a leader there.
The writers corner piece is now documented in the "Jonestown Report" with a link back to Epinions.com. I have received much more action on that piece this month than ever before. It seems that awful and tragic day has been part of the lives of many.
OK, I should get back On Topic.

Here's one example:
(I once emailed an Advisor and very nicely asked her what I could do to improve, and she couldn't be bothered to reply.)
How can you be certain that the advisor received the email?
How can you be certain that the advisor didn't respond and that the response email didn't go astray?
My personal experiences with email are that at best they are as good as the US postal system only quicker and at worst more emails can go astray during a snafu than regular mail getting misdelivered or sent back.
Edited to add: How can you guys be certain that your emails have been received, do you use receipts? I suppose a receipt lets you know that the email was received, but how can you be certain a response wasn't sent? Do you send another email with receipt informing the member you did not receive a response?

RE:
Quote: ladyconsumer I occasionally post (and frequently lurk) on the message boards of a very large movies information database. I can not believe the rudeness and sniping that goes on over there. If you dare to express a dislike for a movie that someone loves you're frequently called a loser. Or told that, clearly, you're too much of a moron to have understood the movie...
Clearly you're too much of a moron to understand how catty we are to each other on these boards. :-) |
