Garden & Gun magazine
I had a good 15 minutes of laughter a couple days ago when I got home and checked the mail. I received a free copy of a new magazine, with a letter telling me that the magazine would be perfect for my lifestyle. The magazine? Garden & Gun. Yes, that would be Garden & Gun. Really.
Nobody's gonna mess with my tomatoes any more!
Actually, it's a lifestyle magazine, along the lines of Southern Living. Someone decided that Southern Living and its ilk are predominately read by women and there must be a way to get both men and women to read. Thus, call your magazine Garden & Gun and sprinkle some manly content among the articles on beautiful homes, southern artists and exotic travel destinations. Is the article on the three women surfers in bikinis inspiring for women, or is it eye candy for men? It actually works both ways. The fashion article with leggy teenage models wearing ordinary (if slightly revealing) clothes that are WAY too expensive might appeal to some teenage girls. However, their fathers will probably like the pictures just fine. Men also get articles on Ernest Hemingway (a well-known man's man) and Raphael Semmes (a Confederate admiral who terrorized Civil War shipping until he was caught napping in a French harbor).
Anyway, the magazine is called Garden & Gun. Best laugh I've had in a while. Maybe I can review it here on Epinions...
Coming soon: magazines called Building & Bomb, Wedding & Weapon and Home & Hollowpoint.

RE: Garden & Gun magazine
Nice.
But I think it's destined to fail. Men and women want their own magazine, not one they have to share. At least not when anybody's looking.

You're right, I think. It's divide and conquer in the magazine business, with the goal being to bring a targeted audience to the mag's advertisers. It's all about the advertisers, and men and women generally shop/buy different products.
I showed G&G around the office and everyone thought it was hilarious. And I work in a prosperous office with excellent salaries, where people actually buy the products advertised in the magazine. The only people who wanted to borrow the magazine were interested in the humor content of the name.
Cat & Cannon is a good one. You could go on in that vein for a while: Horse & Howitzer, Llama & Ligature... even Emu & Uzi sorta works.

The secret to a satisfying composition is understanding the ingredients. It's impossible to roast a tasty turkey unless you know the stuffing, so to speak. Cheers! |

Just thought I'd mention that there's a store near my house that sells computers and guns. |
