86th Street Photo Video

Agree with other posts. I usually google any new company I consider buying from, but failed to this time. I ordered a Garmin GPS unit because they had the "best" price. Once you add expedited shipping at $39 it is not really the best price. I then received an email the following morning requesting that I call and confirm details. The apparent real purpose of the call was to upsell to include memory cards, home charging units and extended warranty. I consistently stated I just wanted the unit and nothing else. Within 45 minutes of concluding this call I received an email indicating that the unit was out of stock and would arrive in 3-4 weeks. I immediately attempted to cancel. I didnt register online, but following their instructions registered so that I could cancel only to find there was no record of the pending order. I then searched online and found the same unit within $10 of total cost at Amazon and can be assured it will be shipped as requested as I have completed multiple transactions with Amazon. I will post back if they try to charge my card in 3-4 weeks, but my guess is they just want that order to go away as I did'nt purchase any of the "Money makers" for them. New version of bait and switch, get to order unit based on low price and then try to make all the money on other units and when you don't purchase they all of a sudden are out of stock.

Sigh, me too

I just had exactly the same issue. Bought a Garmin 880 GPS, and the next day received email indicating I had to call them. I called and was told that they needed to verify the "month" of my credit card expiration, but all they really wanted to do was sell my useless and unbelievably expensive accessories. When I declined, the guy (at extension 210) said "Well, you're screwed then. Your GPS is on back order for five to six weeks." and hung up. Two minutes later I received an email indicating that the GPS was back ordered.

I then called the company back without identifying myself and asked them about the Garmin 880. I specifically asked them if the Garmin 880 was in stock, and they said that they had "several ready for immediate shipment". When I asked him to be sure because I needed one right away, he told me that he "was looking right at them". I then identified myself and he checked my order and said that the Garmin was back ordered. When I challenged him about what he had said about "looking right at them" he replied that I "must have misunderstood him" (yeah, right).

Like the rest of you, I am now concerned that they have my credit card information. Canceling a credit card is painful, but not as painful as spending it would be to spend years trying to rebuild my credit after having my identity stolen. I just canceled the card. Sigh.

86th Street Photo & Video online store

i ordered a Garmin 760 from this site on fri 11/14/08 because they had the best price. i first called them to ask if this was new not refurbed (the answer was NEW)and asked how it could be so cheap. the guy said it's wholesale prices. after i placed the order online, later that day i decided to check out the website opinions as things didnt seem quite right. After reading story after story of bait/switch, high pressure sales of overpriced uneeded products, delays in shipping, i decided to cancel my order. i called them sun 11/16/08 (just after i received the email everyone warned that you would receive - "In order to further verify your order, we will need to speak with you on the phone. Please call our Verification department at 1-800-815-2040 Ext. 209 Jason so we may verify and complete processing your order." Jason asked for my order #, pulled it up and unprofessionally like he was really cool said "oh hey jane doe (but my real name), hows it going?" and i replied that i was calling to cancel my order, not to verify it. He took my request immediately and that was it. That same minute after hanging up, I received am email confirming the order was cancelled and that no charges would appear on my visa. I will watch my card but my cancellation was much easier than i anticipated. so good luck to any of you who have to go through the sucky experiences that i have read about. seems i have gotten out of this unscathed...I ordered Garmin 760 from Amazon on Sat 11/15 and they emailed me sunday saying it was on its way. i am so relieved i found all of your comments about 86th St Video. I paid $50 more to Amazon than the price advertised with shipping at 86th.

RE: 86th street photo and video

I also received the same rude treatment. I ordered a Garmin Nuvi 660 for $165.00 and unless I purchased an SD card at 6 times the cost for one on Ebay they were suddenly out of stock and their representative hung up.

There are no bargains with this vendor.

86th St AND OTHERS

86th St. pulled their usual scam on me; order on the web at low price, have to call to "confirm"--attempt to sell me vastly overpriced accessories, if you resist that, you get an e-mail saying your item is on back order....

SAME scam i got on the same item (Nikon P80 camera) from Big Camera Deals, and from On Time Digital.

A pox on all of them. Order the same item from Amazon, at a higher price, but that price includes a bunch of accessories, and I'll GETT IT--on time, as ordered.

86 St Phot Rip off

My husband and I ordered a camera and when we wouldn't buy the extra's they tried to sell, we got an email that said it is out of stock. They also hung up on us and were very unprofessional on the phone.

Do something about 86th Photo

Here is a post telling us all what to do about 86th St. Photo and Video:

I just spoken (14 Nov 2008) to FBI Special Agent Balias in the Brooklyn, NY office of the FBI. He said to have anyone who has a problem with 86th St. Photo and Video to file a complaint against 86th St. Photo and Video at 800-251-3221 internet crime center - www.ic3.gov file you can file the complaint on line.

FBI Special Agent Balias said that if they get several people to file complaints the FBI will in start an investigation on 86th Street Photo and Video. FBI Special Agent Balias said personally he would like to do this one since they are just down the street from his office

(from Ripoff report)
Please file reports to stop these criminals.

86th street video: same story

Yup, I'm another victim of 86th street video. Same story as all the others: item 'in stock' with the best price around; ordered it; next day I get the email asking to confirm the order via phone; I call (multiple times--already they are hard to get hold of), finally get someone who suggests buying the extra AC power cord (don't you know the DC power cord gets the battery really hot and even the manufacturer recommends using the AC cord??) and also the ext. warranty; I decline; he says he'll send it to shipping to ship; next day, no tracking info; I call again--oops now it's on backorder (3-4 wks). Surprise!!

Add me to list - 86th St Photo

I wish I had read these reports before ordering. Last Friday I placed an order for a Garmin GPS. The 86th St Photo & Video web site came up in a search and their price was a tad below the nearest competitor. I got the E-Mail confirmation with no details of my order. On Sunday there was the phone message requesting confirmation. I called back but only got an answering machine so I left a message that I was confirming my order. I assumed all was OK until today (Thursday) when I expected my order to be received at my house. Brian called and tried to sell me the AC power supply; first at $129.95 and after I refused, it was offered at the manager's special price of $69.95. When I refused again, he said the unit would overheat and be damaged if I used the DC charger that came with it. After I refused for the last time and told him to just ship what I ordered, he said OK, we will charge your card $258.95. I said that was $20 more than the checkout price with shipping. He then told me that the difference was a processing fee and I said "no, there was no processing fee mentioned on the web page". He got very rude and said he could just cancel the order because he didn't want to take my lunch money. I said, "fine, just cancel the order and send me a confirmation of cancellation". He hung up. I'll be re-ordering through a different company.
Bottom line is the same as all who have posted. This company is all about deception and ripping you off. Avoid 86th St Photo & Video. I also agree that the Low Price Digital review page appears to be a fraud to trick consumers into thinking 86th St Video is a legitimate company.

RE: Add me to list - 86th St Photo

Add me to the list of those scammed by this internet "business". After reading your reviews, the same thing happened to me. I "purchased" a Canon Power Shot. Received an e-mail to confirm with a call to "Jason". He tried to almost strong arm me into purchasing extra memory for the camera. I was running late for work and told them I was not interested. The same day I received "the" e-mail stating the camera was on back-order and wouldn't be available for 3-4 weeks or more. But today, low and behold, they were still advertising this exact camera "in stock and ready to ship" and for a price about $25 less than what I ordered it for. I think I will file the complaint with the FBI and I am definitely placing a fraud watch on my account with their name on it. Oh and about all those reviews, most of them were written with very few "cons" and only a few with "other comments". There was a "Jason" listed in the review. Should have read the reviews a little closer and wished the "light bulb" would have gone on. Thanks for all the opinions.

86th St Photo Scam

I read all of the posts regarding this so-called power EBay store, unfortunately, AFTER I had placed an order for a Garmin. I played it smart and cancelled my credit card. As posts said, I received an email saying that the item was not in stock and would be back-ordered (3-4 weeks). As experienced as I am in internet workings, I must admit, I was had. Has anyone attempted to contact EBay? After all, it is after a failed auction bid, that a pop-up appeared recommending other EBay sellers. I believe it is EBay's responsibility to take complaints like these and remove the seller from their system.

Avoid AT ALL COSTS

We ordered a digital camera at a low price from this merchant, and were sent an email saying they had to talk to us on the phone, then essentially demanded that we buy a $10 accessory for $115, which we mistakenly did (my mom was LIED to and told the camera would not work without it which is not true at all), then when we called back to try to return it they were very very rude and gave us a total run-around, saying we cannot return it, etc etc... They are dishonest and would not have sold us the camera by itself, had we refused the accessory the camera would have magically went from "in stock" to "backordered"... From A to Z, this company is scamming people like crazy. We are totally dissatisfied and would return the entire order if it weren't for the 20% mandatory restocking fee and no shipping compensation. Prices are too good to be true, DO NOT BUY from this merchant... period.

86th St. Store

They have a store rating of 3 (out of 5) stars on rightbuy.com, and list themselves as a 5 star merchant.

I've been looking to buy a Panasonic DMC-FZ28 camera. The prices on Amazon are around 278.00 for a 399.00 retail list.
B&H sells it for 250.00, J&R for 278.00. Well, you can see where this is going - 86th St. shows it for 209.00 + 9.95 shipping, and of course no tax.

Well, I thought - too good to be true?

So, thanks Epinions. I think I'll keep my hand on my wallet.
