Catalog Migration

It appears that most of the Outdoor Gear category was migrated over to the Shopping.com catalog last night. This resulted in the creation of a new category called "Sport & Outdoor." From a quick look at my reviews, it seems that most of my outdoor gear reviews have moved over there - but not all. The ones in the new category seem category-less for the moment, but I'm guessing that it'll be fixed eventually.

I figured I'd just post and let people know - there's a thread regarding the issues on the Bugs board if you want more info.

In addition, Andyman from Epinions has answered a number of questions in this thread on the general Epinions board.

If you are wondering what has happened to your Outdoor Gear hats, please see this question and answer below (which is also in the thread on the general board)...

Eps staff is working on fixing this. The hats and leads I guess will be adjusted to fit the new categories that have been created with the site upgrades. Here's Andyman's response to my question about whether or not the "spheres of influence" for hatted members would be expanded...

You got it dead-on exactly right. The display of hats is our most urgent outstanding bug right now.

The whole text of my original questions was this:

RE: categories...
I've got a question about the new categories in general...from what I understand is that in order to merge with the shopping.com info - new categories had to be created. For example most Outdoor Gear items now seem to have become "Sport and Outdoor" topics, not Outdoor Gear topics. Is that a real change with new categories or will everything eventually be merged back down into the existing categories we are used to? If they won't, then I'm guessing that the hatted 'spheres of influence' will be expanded/modified to fit the new categories since at the moment there appears to be no advisors or TRs (or leads) in many of those categories. Just curious - thanks for the earlier clarifications on the categories and search in general.

In addition, there is a discussion here on the General Outdoor Gear Board on this thread that also includes information on the migration and site updates.

RE: Catalog Migration

Here's something I don't understand. When I click on the Yellow tab on the main page called ''Sports'' I get 5 Sub categories: Sports & Outdoors; Outdoor Gear; Stadiums & Arenas; Bikes & Acces; Parks. At the bottom you can click and 'Read New Reviews' in Sports and Outdoors.

If you click on Stadium or Parks subcategories it displays an option to see 'Read New Reviews' for those too. But if you click on any of the other subcategories it displays only the product listings. I guess my question is are some reviews not filtering through the Sports & Outdoors 'Read New Reviews' page? -Dave

I'm not sure. I'm running into this when it comes to searches too. Run a search for The North Face Denali Jacket. I had wanted to see if I should move my older review on it to a new listing, but all you get are product listings, not reviewable listings.

My guess is that the reviewable listing is pages and pages back in the results and I just haven't spent enough time clicking to find it - though what's the point since I doubt a consumer is going to click through pages of results to find the reviews.

I haven't tried to do the just-ins for the individual categories yet - I've just been doing it for the Sports and Outdoors in general, which seems to be picking up most of the stuff (though we get all the travel reviews of parks in there which don't matter to Sports and Outdoor advsiors).

Who knows...I figure we'll have to wait and see what settles out after they attack the bugs and we can go from there.

It appears that the Just In for the overall Sports and Outdoors category misses quite a few products. to see - I went through the last several pages of the overall Just In page and found a number of Sports and Outdoors items that weren't in the Sports and Outdoor Just In.

So I guess the best thing for now is to use the overall Just-In page and browse through it for Sports and Outdoors items.

I was just told that they are working on the bug for Advisors in our category - the fact that the MH button doesn't show up on some reviews and that our rate doesn't show up as an advisor rate on some reviews.

Have your category-less reviews been fixed now? Mine are except for one flashlight review that is no longer accessible (the product listing is gone) and a review of a Day Pack that is now considered luggage and categorized under travel. Now I'm just hoping my popular views keep getting hits :) -Dave

That's funny - my one topic-less review that's left is a flashlight review too - a mini-mag light review.

Otherwise all my reviews seem to have found a home.
