Adding new products
I'd like to see a lot more products added in the outdoors category. I am still trying to get gold prospecting products added to the outdoors category. I can request to have a gold pan added to the Home & Garden category but gold panning is an outdoor activity. Gold prospecting and mining is very similar to the camping category. I guess epinions feels that there is not enough interest in gold prospecting to add it.
Maybe I'll just see if Openroad can add a Gold Pan, a sluice box and a couple of other gold prospecting tools. Then after I review the products, epinions will see the hits that are generated and come around to adding some prospecting supplies.
I also have a ton of fishing lures to get added to the database. I write Openroad about once a month and get new products added. I know he dreads my e-mails ;)That pesky gold miner dude is a pain in the rear!
I'd also like to see more L.L. Bean and Cabela's products added to our database. At any rate, I hope to get my gold prospecting supplies added someday!

RE: Adding new products
People actually research gold panning products? I suppose that since Epinions lists staplers and 3-ring binders, there's room for anything, even things where the technology hasn't really changed in the past 150 years...
I'm still waiting for the day when some of the major Canadian brands get added, which are things that would certainly get as many hits as the current brands. |

Howdy
Yes, the gold mining hobby is a growing outdoor activity. There are also several companies that manufacture the hundreds of different gold mining supplies. For instance there are about ten different companies that make gold pans. I'd like to review them and give the consumer the low down on the best products. Another huge area is gold/metal detectors. Treasure hunting is also growing fast. These retiring baby boomers have to do something besides ride Harleys. There are hundreds of mining supplies that could be reviewed for the recreational gold prospector / treasure hunter. There have been some huge changes in gold prospecting in the last thirty years. I have several gold dredges that I put in rivers and dive on. Gold suction dredges are new. Check out the products if you get some time or care to. It's really becoming a popular hobby in some areas.

Gold Separators
Gold Sluice Boxes
Gold High Bankers
Classifiers
Dry Washers
and on and on
Hey thanks for the reply... take care

Sounds like they could be some interesting reviews - hopefully you get them added.

RE: Adding new products
Campgrounds would be wicked cool. I wouldn't mind being able to add some trails too - there are some out there that deserve their own topics.
A mountain might be nifty to review too!

Campgrounds
would be an excellent addition to the site. Wow, I could spend some time writing in that area. I hope they consider adding this someday. I wonder why epinions is so reluctant to add new some different areas. What is there to lose? It's not a big deal to make it happen. Anyway hope to see campgrounds as well as gold prospecting supplies added. |

Oh see
I am not the only one wanting this. After the holidays, let's see if openroad can bug epinions to add it here NOT in travel and as I have said before too bad they couldn't change fitness chains where fitness equipment is found to the fitness category...sigh. jo |

RE: Adding new products
I just read in USA Today newspaper (12/30/04) that the most popular item to research on E-Bay is "RVs" - recreational vehicles. Imagine all the readers we could draw into the site if they added such a category...and get some spillover into outdoor gear :) I wish epinions was more proactive!

There is under autos. I reviewed my RV. I won't post the link here but if you go to cars and scroll down you'll see it there. Of course that's another good example of a category that should be here since you don't use an RV unless you are doing outdoor stuff. I don't think we'll ever see swapping of topics. Though I do find it interesting that Parks are listed in the two combined categories yet when you rate them if you are an advisor it shows up as travel. jo

RE: Adding new products
As jo said, there are RV's in Cars & Motorsports - but they just don't get the reviews. The C&M statistics actually indicate that RV's are the most popular item within the C&M area. When you consider they can be the same cost as a house, or even more, it's not surprising that people want to research them.
I honestly don't think they'd do much to draw people to Outdoors anyways. I associate RV's with old retired couples and new families with not much money to spend - pardon the stereotyping. As such, you've got a relatively unactive crowd and a crowd that simply cannot afford new equipment where comparison shopping would be useful. There are exceptions, such as jo, but I predominantly see those two groups in summer in the parks all around here. Maybe you'd draw in a few reviews in various areas, but it'd be very limited. |

RE: Adding new products
associate RV's with old retired couples and new families with not much money to spend - pardon the stereotyping...(: crying ..althought we are old and hubby has a great job with lots of time off, we love to RV. It is an affordable way to travel (I do agree it was fantastic with the kids - not because of the money but because they could take their bike, ride around campgrounds, have autonomy a hotel wouldn't allow) and a fun one. So much fun! How else would we have travelled for 91 days? I guess going from hotel to hotel, packing an unpacking, but an RV is like having your house with you.
There is a stereotype to the type of people who RV and I won't say it though our former friends (not former because of what they called us but for other reasons) used to tease us all the time. They gave us dice for our car and lights for our trailer - that sort of thing. In the meantime we got to travel cross country and they didn't. I do think with us babyboomers aging RVing will be even more popular. Some of these units are $300,000++ so they are attracting people with money. Perhaps they've sold their house and have retired or have gone into debt but I do think I am seeing a more mainstream group of RVers now than I did 10 years ago. jmho..jo |

I don't doubt that there are a number of well-off outdoorsy people with RV's. There have been times that I've wished I had a small, hard-sided travel trailer (*cough* yellowstone). I'm just saying that of the thousands I see every year, there is no mistaking that the vast majority of them are owned by people that aren't that way. |

You were in Yellowstone in a soft sided something or tent? Ouch. That Bison must have hurt:) Thanks though when I mention that I'm gaining weight my husband must remind me of my age! jo |

RE: Adding new products
Yeah, my tent.
The one night a bison was actually sleeping in the site next to ours. Later, this family with brand new camping gear came along (they had a 2-person tent for the 5 of them - which I don't think they had ever set up before), and spent the night sitting in their van watching TV... |

RE: Adding new products
I'm just getting around to reviewing most of my outdoor equipment. I was surprised that so few items that I have are in the database. Or it takes quite a while to dig it up in the database. Have others had this experience too?
Also, some items I consider to be "outdoor gear" are coming up under "home and garden". I don't mind posting it there but it seems like a misclassification. I guess it will all be fixed by the new "catalog". -Dave |

RE: Adding new products
I've found that some products we think of outdoor aren't in that category - I guess it has to do with the way that products are classified in the database.
If you can't find a product to review, just ask the Category Lead (Openroad) and he'll try to add it. Sometimes they can be and sometimes he won't be able to add the product.

My husband (http://www.epinions.com/user-pteal) is into gold prospecting, big time... he'd love to see products added!
Feel free to e-mail him/me - he's obsessed with gold prospecting! Ever goldpan/etc. in the Northeast?

For sure H & G and outdoor products are mixed up- camping knives I think are one of the products in H & G. But we have Park in Sports and Outdoors yet it shows up in travel(: jo |
