Movie Critic Rule Book

Here's a most excellent article from Roger Ebert about his rules for being a movie critic.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2008/10/eberts_little_rule_book.html

I think the first one is the best - Advise your readers. Don't tell them they will love or hate a movie - just tell them why you loved or hated it.

Some good advise there, though its relevance to Epinions writers is perhaps debatable on many points as he's talking about things that don't really apply to us (at least, I've never been offered freebies, incentives and a party with the Korean Britney Spears to review a film!!). A lot of it is common sense stuff that one would hope most Epinions writers will have picked up after a couple of months. Still, it was interesting to see a respected professional's viewpoint on what most of us here do more or less as a hobby.

Thanks for the link! (Though you could have actually linked it... :-p)

Look, I really ENJOYED the last film by Korean director Park Chan-wook and it had NOTHING to do with my date with my date with BoA Kwon. We both had a pleasant time at the screening of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and yea I was put up at a nice South Korean Hotel, and given dinner, but that's all!

With all due respect

The day I take movie reviewing advice off Ebert is the day I eat my own face.

Moreso when not only does a) Ebert look like an utter cretin in the picture on the right hand side of that page but b) the entire article contains some of the most redundant information I have ever read in my life.

Maybe that's too harsh on my behalf, and maybe it will be helpful to people still trying to find their feet when it comes to reviewing films, but I'll admit that I'm utterly blinded by my hatred of the man.

Are you *sure* you want to say that? I mean you might find one of these days thoughts from the article creeeeeeeping into your reviewssssss and then a thought might spring to your mind: "How would my nose taste?"

Just saying.

RE: Movie Critic Rule Book

Heh:)

But...

Now that I've actually entered into the thread (bleh, I was avoiding it).

The article is kinda frustrating and just feels recursive for me. That is, anyone caring enough about Ebert to read the article probably would either do or wouldn't do the things advised in the article and the article wouldn't change things either way. It seems to be a list of Ebert's digs at other reviewers rather than really a serious list of helpful advice/hints/whatnot. I mean it is kinda like *snickersnicker*you called that your fav and didn't put it in your top ten*snortscoff*. Maybe it would be a pet peeve list but *shrug*. Most of the rest of the advise is fairly trite in the vein of 'show don't tell' advice.

And then he switches to bold for the latter half of the article which is just dang sloppy and a pain in the buttocks. Personally this would be something that would make a reasonably serious list for me. Actually go over your work. Read it after you put it out for all to see.. Just sloppy stuff and I kinda feel bad for the guy (who I know is having medical problems and all but...).

The freebie stuff seems just like bragging for me:) So (in some ways) does the trailer thing given that most of us don't exactly have access to the sneaks.

Nuts, I went to quote this, but accidentally hit "report" :(

Aaaaaaaa-ny-way.

I hope you're not trying to insinuate that I could ever view films in the same manner as Ebert. Even slightly. Because if I ever did I'd... well, I'd just have to stop writing. Period.

Wellllllll... I could point out some similiarities like the fact that you both use WORDS in your reviews...

But I won't.

Nope, no similarities.

:)

I just thought the idea of eating one's own face off was interesting:)
