Dumb Question!

Hi, this isn't a tip, hint, or whatever. But since no one seems to have any, I thought I'd use the space to ask a question.

In previous music reviews, and I can't remember whose, the reviewer put music notes (probably quarter notes) into the review. I know these notes are available in different Character Maps, but I'm wanting to know the

AltX code number or the Unicode number for musical notations.

Does anyone have that info they could pass on to me? I've searched the Web, but can't seem to find a simple answer.

Thanks,

Lorace

RE: Dumb Question!

I might be the person you're talking about, as I've been using notes to bookend quoted lyrics for the last few months. Generally I've been using 16th notes, (♬ = unicode number 9836) but you can also use quarter notes (♩ = 9833), 8th notes (♪ = 9834) or connected 8th notes (♫ = 9835).

Hope this helps...

RE: Dumb Question!

Ben, thank you ever so much.

Yes, it truly does help.

I just think it looks fantastic in a review, and you're probably the one I was thinking of.

You've made my day!

I will quickly retort then off to the 9 to 5er

Real quickly... anyone been paid for 9.04 royalties yet?

Anyways...

My general rule(s) of thumb(lol) for reviewing...

First and foremost your lead sentence and intro must be appealing, attractive, catchy and have flow...most of the time i manage to do this... but you can tell when im getting really lazy and I start out a review with an idiot question lol...

Quotes , quotes and more "blah blah blah"... I can not stress enough how beautiful quotes can be... a bland story can be made exciting and memorable with quotes... tricky part is getting em.. if you c&p it becomes a credit and permission issue.. this is where networking comes in

Quotes a: networking....yummy stuff... its all about getting your name out as much as possible.. be conservative at first till ppl learn youre idiosyncracies (or however its spelled..could we get a spell check please Mr and Mrs Epinions? thats all i want for Christmas, perhaps a bold, and italics too.. but spellcheck first.. I love you).....

Song intercepts...like quotes dirty molesting little cousin...song quotes are easy and beautiful... they let the record speak for itself...and open up a whole new world of descriptive run-offs..and dont involve accrediting....have fun!

Most importantly to me is closing it up... the day my editor showed me why Hunter Thompson is god is the day I realized my potential for writing (not grammar, english, but overall stream of consciousness writing.) Regardless of style and performance... the most important thing to the reader is the conclusion... your conclusion is your lawyers closing arguments.. but most importantly your conclusion makes a pitch for repeat readers also... Back to stream of consciousness. Try your best to end on a similiar note that you started on... the best thing a writer can do is make a human laugh cry smile smirk or whatever... feel ALL THE human emotions in one page and then come back around to the beginning at the end...

Point of all of this... your style is yours... just like DNA it can not be repeated, cloned, redone, shammied, rigged, or something else clever...(despite what modern science says) Just be yourself..and write a review how you would wanna read it...

IF any of that makes no sense at all(which Im sure it does lol)....Please dont hesitate to message someone else lmao... naw just kidding email me hstisgod2000@yahoo.com

1 make the reader see what you love

2 write what you know.......

3... but try and know a lot

4 avoid slavish pronouncments( like, oh my god, jessica simpson is the greatest singer ever!)

5 Love what you write about

Word. It's terribly annoying when people write in that ditzy, colloquial style. "Like, JoJo is so cool it's not even funny!!!11!1! doesn't tell me much about the record, does it Cameron, Samantha, and Hillary? I hate you Hillary. You smell and I hate you. I hate everybody that looks like you.

I have a question...I have been trying to figure out how to put bold type and italics in my reviews. Is there an html shortcut?

Micheal

Great question! My advice to music writers is to always put song titles in italics, and to use bold font to highlight an artist or group name the first time it appears in the review. as to HOW to do this:

<i>Song Title</i> = Song Title

<b>Artist/Group Name</b> = Artist/Group Name

My 2 cents, or here on Epinions, make that 1/4 of 1/2 cent!

Great ideas from everyone! I've only just now even found the msg boards. I don't really have any tip other than this one, but I know everyone works differently. I'm a songwriter so that's the way I write. As far as my reviews go I just let them flow and then go edit any mistakes. I do have to watch listing every song, sometimes it can be necessary but not always, if it's done all the time and can just get tedious. At least for me, allowing stuff to be kinda liquid adds to the pleasure of writing. Just my view on it. I'd like to say I'm very glad there's a msg board on here.

How NOT to write a music review...

Here's an easy to remember rule:
When writing a music review, write the review yourSELF.

Don't copy it from someone else and post it here... Especially not from widely available sources like the All Music Guide.

You know who you are.

RE: Late advice!

Yes, I actually have some advice...

CARE. Put some you in your stuff. Nothing is more boring than seeing reviewers who spit out bland, soulless, cold statistics. We don't want robots or Stepford Reviewers. I know some of you may be writing with the consumer in mind. Good. But for others, why not let us get to know you better? This IS a community, after all, and developing a writing style and letting your personality shine through is very attractive.

glory hallelu...

Quote: caffienatedyak
Be creative - but not TOO creative. Make sure we're still reading a music review and not mindless, wandering, off-topic self-indulgence on how far-out wacky crazy innovative you are...

Been there. Done that. Not planning on going back.

Quote: caffienatedyak
Don't be afraid to be detailed, and at the same time, you don't have to go overboard either (guilty as charged!). You can be concise and informative at the same but, but if you serve up a book report review, cool. It had damn well BETTER be entertaining, though.

preach it, sister...

Quote: caffienatedyak
Finally, disregard all above and don't take it too seriously. It is only one of millions of websites on the internet, after all. The INTERNET. Remember that.

hey, I was just kidding with that "sister" comment... :)
