Pros: great for long climbs, almost impossible to be droped
Cons: not good for lead belay and creates bad habits
The Bottom Line: I personally liek the grigri and think taht it is very effective on long routes. If you dont have one, then get one. it could save your life
Petzl has created many devises for climbing which makes the technical part of climbing easier, more fun and safer. Even though the GriGri is not a new invention it is still a very useful item. On long top rope routes, this devise is very useful and helps to prevent error on the belayers behalf. This devise is supposed to be used with a rope that is 9.5 - 10.5mm wide. It also is made to prevent falls that can cause death due to faulty belaying. I have seen people even rappel using the grigri. I really do not recommend it though. The one thing I really do not like about the grigri is that it makes bad habits. Bad habits are made when a person solely relies on the grigri and does not belay properly with the devise. there is really not much more i can say about the grigri. Oh yea, it costs about $70, which makes it something that if you aren’t going to use often not worth the money. if you look around you can find it for about $50.
