| toiletoctopus's Full Review: SUPER 8 MOTEL - MIDDLETOWN |
I spent two nights in this motel during the week, while out on a deer hunting trip in the Shenandoah Valley. My friend's uncle was kind enough to let us hunt on his property, and even offered to put us up for serveral nights, but unfortunately I am allergic to his rather feisty cat. People who have allergies to cats know full well, that no matter where you stay in a house, the cat dander is impossible to run away from. So with this in mind I reserved two nights at the Super 8 Motelin Middletown, Virginia, which is located right off of Interstate 81.
It might be impossible to give this motel a fair assessment, because I was tremendously thankful for a warm room, after spending days in a deer blind while in windy and snowy conditions. However, at $54.95 a night, I would consider it a good value under any circumstance. Reserving a two bed room was not a problem through Travelocity, and since my friend smokes, I was decent enough to reserve a smoking room. Check-in was simple enough, with a clerk that was so friendly and polite, that I decided to write to this company thanking them for her fine service. She did not even bat an eye at us, in our camo clothes and rifles in cases. However, the yuppies in this pool looked shocked and concerned when we walked by, and we got a good laugh out of this.
Immediately upon entering our assigned room, we were shocked to see that there was only one bed. While my hunting buddy is my best friend, we didn't want any accidental spooning during the night. The old line of "those aren't pillows!" wasn't among our ideas for a restful night after being out in the field, so I went downstairs to discuss this issue with the clerk. She was quite helpful, and immediately got us another room, and gave me new check in cards. These did not work immediately, so I went downstairs again, and she kindly remedied this problem. It was a bit frustrating after a long day, but we are fairly patient, so it wasn't that big of a deal.
The room was pretty large, and I was instantly amazed by the art decco style of bedsheets. It looked like something out of a coffee shop from the 80's, with lots of God awful pastel colors that can wake you up in the middle of the night screaming. Other than this minor shock, I was actually impressed by the room, and the bed was really comfortable. It had three blankets on top, which was great after the day outside, and a decent sized tube style TV to watch. You get HBO at this motel, as well as free local calls, and a coffee maker and fridge in the room. While these are not fancy by any means, its a lot more than I have gotten elsewhere, for a whole lot less.
The bathroom was not disgusting, but it wasn't what you would get at a higher priced hotel. The paint was a bit dull and peeling in some parts, and the shower curtain looked like it had been around for a bit too long. There was no place to put the soap I brought inside the shower, so it kept falling off of the little ridge that I kept trying to place it at. The shower took at least five minutes to properly heat up, so this was a bit frustrating, especially after wanting nothing more than to get in there after a long day outside. As for the water pressure, it was acceptable, but I would have liked it to have been a bit stronger. Super 8's towels were clean and of perfect size for drying, and although I didn't use their shampoo and soap bar, it was a nice touch.
Would I recommend the Super 8 Motel in Middletown, Virginia? Absolutely, as it is a wonderful value for the price. It is priced at the same rate, that other less than satisfactory motels in the area are. Its location and large parking lot, as well as friendly service and free internet, make it a perfect place to spend a night or two. They also give you a free continental breakfast, which isn't that great, but it adds to the value by having a bagel or donut before walking out the door. This is not a Hilton or Marriott, but for what it is, you cannot beat it for the price.
