There's only one big complaint I have about the United States Postal Service: they take too many days off. My birthday was last Saturday. That's Veteran's Day. Since that became one of many federal holidays, starting when I was a child, I haven't received a birthday card in the mail on the day of my birthday for about 35 years. Now that my little rant is out of the way, I admit I really like the U.S. Postal Service.
It's MailPerson, Thank You Very Much
I have two mail carriers, one at my office and one at my home. Both happen to be women, and both are very nice and go out of their way to be helpful. Since I order a lot of merchandise online, I have many packages delivered to both places.
A couple of weeks ago, the lady who delivers my home mail saw that the skies looked rainy, and she had a package that wouldn't fit in my mail box. Since she saw that my garage door was open, she pulled into the driveway and put the package and my mail inside and out of the elements.
At my office, I have a "new" mail lady who replaced the mailman I had for 10 years named "Buzz." No matter what kind of odd name or suite number was on a package that was meant for me, Buzz knew where it belonged because he knew my usual deliveries. Some deliveries or letters I've received were lucky to land in my building of a few dozen offices, much less at my office. Buzz retired, and I will miss his "instinct" for getting the right package or letter to the intended tenant in this building. The new mail lady is getting pretty good, too!
Thirty-Three Cents is a Bargain
When I recently changed banks and started doing business with a bank that's so new, they barely have any ATMs where I can make deposits, the CEO personally handed me a generous stack of stamped envelopes so I could mail deposits to them. At first, I didn't think this was such a great idea, but I've really warmed to it!
Instead of driving to and waiting in line at the ATM, I just fill out a deposit slip, stick that and any checks in the envelope and drop it in the box or hand it to my mail lady. It couldn't be easier, and it has always arrived at the bank the next day.
Certainly, I'd use 33 cents worth of gas driving to even the closest ATM where I can make a deposit.
I LOVE the BEAUTIFUL Stamps
Stamps are truly little, tiny, beautiful works of art. You can buy stamps to fit your personality (I've loved using Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Mercer, Buggs Bunny, Grace Kelly...). A stamp can make a statement for you -- Breast Cancer Awareness, Black History Month, Famous Composers, Famous Movie Directors -- when you receive a letter with a special stamp, you notice it most of the time. The stamp chosen tells you a bit about the sender of the letter or package -- like a little kiss or whisper!
Nobody else but the U.S. Postal Service lets you buy little works of art to stick on your letters and packages and use as many or as few as you like. The ability to buy and use beautiful little sticky things that have an important function is the height of innovation and creativity to me!
You Know What Time The Mail Arrives
Sure, there are variables, but most of us can count on the U.S. Mail truck coming to our houses or businesses at a certain hour of the day, every day mail is delivered. If they're late, we have pangs of regret or anxiety -- "are they late, or didn't I get anything?"
Our spirits soar when there's an envelope that's actually hand-addressed like a greeting card or fat letter inside! The U.S. Postal Service is so deeply engrained in each of our daily lives like few other businesses are. Now they didn't get to that pinnacle by being slackers.
With UPS, even as reliable as they are, you don't always know that they're coming in the late morning or early afternoon. Same way with FedEx and other newer carriers. We don't get packages from these people every day. But we'll get a letter of some kind delivered by the USPS just about every single day.
Reliability and consistency. Nobody does it better than the Mail Man! Excuse me, Mail PERSON!
