| writer's Full Review: US Postal Service Standard Mail |
My husband and I have had PO boxes for years, in several post offices, so we have some experience in "in-house" mail delivery. Our last post office was manned by a wonderful gentleman named Tony, who learned our habits, and took excellent care of us. He even held mail when he realized we hadn't been able to pick it up, and put it in one of the lock boxes, so we could get it after hours. Fact is, he was so good at his job, he spoiled us, and made us think all PO boxes would receive the same service. Sad truth, it's not so.
We moved away from that PO branch, but kept our box there for several years, just because of Tony. Finally, it got to be too much of a hassle to drive miles out of our way, and we moved the box, around the corner from my office at the University of Nevada, to the "University Station" PO. What a huge mistake.
First, this PO serves mainly students on a transient basis. That means in plain language, they don't have to be good, or even half-ass. They won't see most of their "clients" after a few semesters, ever again, and that's just the kind of service they give. I should have known when I saw letters that had been mis-delivered, stuck into the top of the mail boxes all around the post office, but I just didn't get it. And I still don't! You wouldn't believe the amount of mail that is mis-delivered into my box. Often it's supposed to go in the box above, but just as often it's not even close in PO number or proximity.
The office where I used to work in the University also had a large PO box at the same post office. We received a very large volume of mail, ours, and everybody else's!! This post office also has a wonderful habit of not letting you know that you have a bin of mail, by putting one of those little slips in the box. We had a lot of students working for us who checked the mail, and they weren't always intuitive enough to figure if the box was empty, there might be TOO MUCH to fit, so they'd just come back with no mail. Then we'd have to send them back again, to get the bin. We asked the post office repeatedly to put a slip in our box, (like every other PO I've ever used,) but I guess that was just too much trouble.
Since I work at home, I get a lot of checks in the mail (no pun). You wouldn't believe the amount of checks and other mail that we've never gotten, or took over 2 weeks to get to us, from right here in Reno. I'm sure it's because they were mis-delivered to another box, and either just thrown away, or the students left and never came back for their last mail.
Since we weren't used to such shoddy service, we complained to several people in the "chain of command" in our local Post Office hierarchy. What a joke. Complaining to the Post Office is kind of like crying in the rain, nobody notices, and nothing happens. Not only has the service not improved, those tell-tale letters, stuck in the top of the mail boxes, are still flowering like it was spring, whenever you visit the PO.
We keep this box only because we get a large volume of mail, and the kids in our neighborhood think it's "cool" to mess with mailboxes. We never can be sure we've gotten everything. We're planning on selling our house in the near future, and as soon as we do, we'll move our PO to our new neighborhood. I can't wait! The University Station in Reno is the worst PO I've ever encountered, and they just don't care. If you live in Reno, don't EVEN go there!
