If you are like me, you like receiving certain types of mail. I love getting my greeting cards, magazines and catalogues that I subscribe to. I do not, however, enjoy receiving requests for remittance of payment from companies. But, then, who in their right mind likes to receive bills?! I have another section of deliverable mail that I simply cannot stand in my mail box. That is non-first class mail, specifically "junk mail".
Have you ever wondered where all of this junk comes from? And why you are receiving it and so much of it? Well, allow me to enlighten you. Once upon a time, you probably sent a donation to a worthy charity. I know I have. Then over the next few weeks and months, you may have gotten bombarded with a whole slew of charities asking you for money! This has happened to me more times than I care to mention. Little did I know, that my name and address had been sold to those other charities.
Similarly, I like mail order catalogues. I once ordered Christmas gifts from Spiegel Catalogue. Suddenly, I was getting catalogues from across the Continental United States begging me for my business!! First class mail is one thing. Wedding invitations, birthday cards, personal correspondence from friends and relatives. Bulk mail or junk mail is an entirely different issue.
There is a way to stop junk mail from cluttering up your mail box. The Mail Preference Service handles requests by consumers, to decrease the amount of advertisements we receive over time!! The junk mail will not stop completely, but this is a great start in lessening the volume that you may receive. All you have to do is register with this company and they will add your name and address to their file of persons requesting not to receive certain types of mailing.
Keep in mind that some companies do not list with MPS and you may still receive mail from them. You will also receive mail from places where the address is RESIDENT or CURRENT OCCUPANT. From an insiders experience, the way to handle these mailings is to simply throw them away if it is something that does not interest you. It is not the mailman's fault for delivering this mail to you. It is not the fault of the United States Postal Service. Any mail that has a good address must be delivered if it says RESIDENT or OCCUPANT.
I was curious about this service so I filled out a request and mailed it to the Mail Preference Service. Within four weeks, I truly noticed a substantial difference in the amount of junk mail that I received. I highly recommend this service. The United States Postal Service is trying to improve the quality of their customer service, one step at a time.
Why not jot down the following address and join in with millions of other consumers, including myself, and decrease the amount of non-first class mail that you receive. You will be pleased that you did, and your mailman will certainly thank you!
