| MikesCelticLuv's Full Review: US Postal Service Standard Mail |
Like many people, there is a lot I like about the United States Postal Service, but there are also a few things that can be improved.
I am a frequent visitor to the my local post office. I rent my own little box there (I feel so important). I buy a lot of stuff from Ebay. Since I'm not about to give my home address to complete strangers, I use my P.O. box. I also get a lot of free samples online as well as regular correspondence from people I've met on the Internet. So, that box fairly often.
First of all, I love my local post office. The people who work there are extremely helpful and friendly. About a year ago they had a make-over. There is now a separate counter for buying stamps, stationary, packing supplies and the like. This has helped keep the lines shorter. I don't think I'll ever have to complain about the lines at the Post Office. I have never spent more than 15 minutes (and that was during Christmas) standing in line, a figure that seems to surprise most people I talk to.
Back to the people who work there. I can always count on getting help along with a friendly attitude from the people that work there. Sometimes I have a pretty stupid question about a particular service. The clerk who is waiting on me will take the time to explain it in a courteous manner. One time, I didn't pack a box too well. I was in a rush, I ran out of packing tape and finished the job with duct tape (stop laughing). When I got to the counter, the clerk told me that wouldn't hold. He grabbed a new roll of packing tape and sealed it up nice for me. No extra charge.
I do have one complaint about this office. On a few occasions I have had problems with my P.O Box. A friend sent an 8x10 photo to my box. Written on the front of the envelope, in bold black letters, were the words, "DO NOT BEND." That same request was written three times on the back of the envelope. However, when I opened my box, the envelope was quite bent. I went up to the counter and complained. The clerk apologized about three times. I haven't had problems with photos after that. Now they put a slip in box box telling me to retrieve my item at the counter.
On two other occasions, things were sent back to the people that mailed me the items. I have no idea why. I received one of those orange slips in my box saying my item could be retrieved at the counter. It had arrived three days earlier. When I went to the counter, the clerk told me it had been sent back. Why? He did not know. I ask him to please check around for me, which he did, but my package was not there. The person who sent the package had to send it again. The second time the scenario was almost the same. I got the slip saying a package had been delivered a few days before, come to the counter for it. However, there is a box on the slip that is supposed to include the name of the person who sent the item. This box was empty. When I got to the counter they told me my package had been sent back. I was peeved because not only was this the second time it happened, but I also had no clue who had sent the package-and neither did they. Again, the clerk couldn't give any explanation. After some polite ranting from me, he apologized profusely. I had to e-mail everyone who may have sent me something to clue them in on the situation. I finally figured out who had sent the package, a lady from eBay who thought I rejected it. She wasn't going to send it back until she heard from me. I haven't had that problem with the Post Office since then (December 1999).
As for day by day mail, I don't have many complaints. I hear people talking about getting their mail at the same time everyday. Usually, this mail is delivered by the same person. That's an alien concept to me. We usually have a different person everyday and the mail comes anytime between 11am and 5pm. At least my dog gets a new person to bark at everyday. Recently, some of our carriers have been out of uniform. There I am, sitting on the step when some lady comes walking up to my house in jeans and a T-shirt handing me a package. Ummm, is this a mail bomb? She wasn't even carrying the standard bag. It was just my moms order from her book club, but how did I know? If I go to work without my uniform (scrubs), my supervisor has something to say. I'm not going to nitpick, though.
Overall, I am satisfied with the USPS. My mail usually gets to its destination on time. Their services are cheap. I have only received one damaged item in my twenty-some years on this planet. My mom can't even remember the last time a piece of mail was damaged. The people in my area are friendly. Would I recommend them? You bet!
