| Mimi369's Full Review: US Postal Service Standard Mail |
When I was a little girl, my mother would send me to the local post office to buy a book of stamps. This was the extent of my experience with the US Postal Service until I became employed there 21 years ago.
After ten years working nights in mail processing, I felt that it was time for a change. I began working in the very same local post office that I frequented as a child. Not only was I amazed at what goes on behind the scenes, the part that the customer never sees, but I was introduced to the wonderful world of stamps.
There are definitive stamps and commemorative stamps, stamp booklets and stamp coils. Panes of sheet stamps offered in a wide variety of styles and colors to suit nearly every consumers taste. Most stamps now come self adhesive which was a long time request from postal customers. These have become the biggest and most popular selling item.
In July of 1998, the United States Postal Service embarked on a first time enterprise. The American Cancer Society has teamed up with the US Postal Service to promote Breast Cancer Awareness through the sale of Breast Cancer Research stamps. These stamps are colorful and self adhesive. The best part about these stamps is that a portion of each stamp sold goes directly for research to find a cure for breast cancer.
Many consumers are still unaware of this fact. Whenever window clerks offer these important stamps to their customers, most of the time, the customer acts as though they do not have the time to hear the well-rehearsed plea from the clerk. This is a shame because it only takes of moment of your time to hear them out. Well, think about this. Thus far, due to the sales of Breast Cancer Research stamps, the US Postal service has been able to contribute millions of dollars to the search for a cure!
The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler, who is a breast cancer survivor. The stamp is known as a semipostal stamp and is a non-denominational stamp. This means that there is no cent amount printed on the stamp. It is a first class US stamp and has the first class rate of 33 Cents. The cost of each stamp is 40cents. The additional seven cents per stamp adds up. If you purchased just twenty Breast Cancer Research stamps, you are only paying an additional $1.40! You probably spend more than that on a cup of coffee and a donut!
Imagine the mothers, wives, sisters, aunts, grandmothers and girlfriends whose lives may be spared if a cure for breast cancer is found. Even a small percentage of men are afflicted each year with this dreaded disease. Breast cancer affects all of us. The United States Postal Service is doing its part in helping to stamp out breast cancer.
The next time you request "a book of stamps", be more specific. Remember the wide variety of stamps offered at your local post office. Make your next purchase Breast Cancer Research stamps. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
