You really can't understand Drexel until you go there. It seemed like a great school for me: it's right in the middle of Philadelphia & their co-op program would help me line up a job even before I graduate. Well....let me just say there are a lot of things the campus tour guides & informational videos will not tell you. First of all, if you plan on living on campus, have fun. Fire drills in the wee hours of the morning are very common. I'm afraid to have my boyfriend come sleep over, because every time he did, we had fire drills at 5:30am & 4:00am. It's usually drunk idiots pulling the alarms. On one occasion, they were playing with the fire extinguishers in the stairwell. Which brings me to another point about residence life: Drexel charges you for everything. Since no one confessed to the fire extinguisher incident, the whole building is charged. Just a few weeks ago, someone ripped down all our flyers on our floor, & now we're being charged. Even if you weren't on campus the night of an incident, you still have to pay. They're real shady about it too: they tack it on your tuition. So moms & dads, beware of this before you send your kids to Drexel.
Also, when you are on co-op (which by the way, you are not guaranteed one & Drexel does nothing to help you) you still have to pay full tuition - even though you are not attending any classes & are most likely not living on campus.
Calling all freshman - you are required to take University 101 class in the fall & winter terms of your first year. I'll warn you now it's the biggest waste of time. All you do is read this book about getting the most out of college - complete with self-help quizzes. Also, in order to pass the class you are required to do what we like to call "mandatory volunteering." It's really called Service Learning, & all the freshmen have to go to the Philadelphia public schools & teach the kids - regardless of their majors. Hey, I like kids, but I'm no teacher. If I wanted to be one, I'd be in the education department. So, in addition to homework, studying, etc. you now must review lesson plans & get together activities for the grade you are teaching. I wouldn't mind doing community service, but the least they could do was give us a choice. Personally, I'd rather pick up garbage in Fairmount Park than teach little kids.
Don't let them fool you - frats are a big part of the social scene. So, if you're not a drinker (& I'm not) you'll feel left out big time. Not to mention having to deal with vomiting in the bathrooms the morning after.
There are some great professors at Drexel, but most of them are mediocre. The work is also cake (unless you're an engineer). If you do your homework & study, I guarantee you'll excel. You're better off going to a more competitive school & challenging yourself. Plus, if you are an art major, or just something other than engineering or comp sci, the programs here are not very good. It's an engineering school, period. I've had people ask me why I chose to go to Drexel if I'm a communications major.
Please seriously consider all these points before applying to Drexel. Don't make a mistake like I did - I'm planning on transferring next year.
