| punkl's Full Review: Drexel University |
I graduated Drexel University in 1999 with a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering. Now, where should I start? I enjoyed being at Drexel the first year. Classes were outlined fairly well and the professors were ok. Not outstanding - just ok. I was enrolled in the E4 program (an experimental engineering curriculum). During my 5 years there, the E4 program changed names, the course numbers and names were changed numerous times, and also the requirements were changed so many times that I did not know if I was going to graduate until the last day of classes. At one point, I went to the Assistant Head of the Electrical Engineering department (I will withhold the name, but you can look it up) and he informed me that I did not need to take a certain class because another one of my classes replaced it. Then, at the beginning of my last quarter there, I was informed that I could not graduate without taking the class. That is just one of many examples.
The administration was clueless. Most of the professors were very smart, but more interested in playing in sand than teaching. There was only one professor there which I considered superb. He taught one of the most difficult subjects for me - Microwave Engineering, but he made it easy to learn. He does not belong there. He is much too good. There are many professors there who are not very intelligent. I do not know how they got any degree. I sincerely believe they are kept there for comic relief.
As for education, I learned everything I know about electrical engineering (save the Microwave engineering stuff) from my co-op (which, by the way, I had no help from Drexel in obtaining). It would have been more productive if I had gone to work at an engineering company right out of high school. I actually learned more skipping about 2/3 of my senior year and teaching myself. The professors are just there to confuse you.
For all of you art majors who are considering Drexel - this is for you. My wife was a graphic design major. From what she has said, most of the people in the art department (and ONLY the art department) are helpful. The general attitude from the rest of the school's administration is that art majors are stupid. An example of this is when my wife tried to take a calculus course. She had taken AP calculus in high school and they wanted her to take algebra for her math requirement. She was not allowed to take calculus because it is not open to art majors. There was enough room in the class so it wasn't like she was trying to take the place of someone who had that course as a requirement. Then she decided to try engineering. At one point while she was talking to an advisor, his exact words were, "Why were you so dumb as to chose art as a major?" That's when she decided to leave the school.
Finally, we come to the engineering senior design projects. I had an advisor who just plain sucked. He made us rewrite our proposal enough times so we missed out on any funding. When we presented it at the end of the year, he was not at the presentation. He had something "better" to do. I didn't care because I didn't like him anyway, but then I found out that he was going to make us represent it just to him. I found out when I was at my parent's house and it made me so angry that I had to grab and ax and go chop wood for about half an hour is 90 degree weather.
If you are considering Drexel, I highly recommend that you drop it from your list of schools. Once Drexel gets your tuition, they do not care about doing anything for you. Take a look at the University of Delaware. They are cheaper, they have better professors, a nicer campus, and you can actually talk to a helpful person without breaking your leg and waiting for the paramedics to get there. That is where my wife transfered and there were many times I had to find something out for her and I could - very easily - without even being a student! Plus it's ranked higher than Drexel.
