GoPro HERO 3 Silver
Make your own Reality Show? Film your high impact adventures? If it blows your hair back, the GoPro might be what your looking for to film your outdoor adventures. I teach, write, consult and review survival and outdoor gear. So I find myself at the sporting goods stores quite a bit. Last year while looking for a range finder I noticed the GoPro and the salesman knowing what I do asked if I had considered filming Survival tecniques / training. Up until then I hadn't given the idea much thought. After a few minutes of pondering on the idea, I went ahead made the purchase.
I had several ideas for my new movie camera that can be strapped to my head gear, pick up dash or about anything. The first thing that crossed my mind was my Dachshunds. Through life’s crazy twists and turns, I ended up with a small herd of them and they're great fun! Another thing that I do is survival and tactics training. Over the past couple of years folks are really beefing up on Survival, Self-Defense and Prepping. I also have a good sense of humor and could double as Larry the Cable Guy. I have been working on making videos of https://www.facebook.com/Shastadachshunds . I have also made a couple How to survival videos.
The camera itself is user friendly and easy to learn how to use. The Field of view is huge so it doesn't miss anything. The only complaint I have is you have no idea what your field of view is. You just turn it on, point in the direction you want to film and that's it. There's no way to know how large your film frame will be. This works well when I am using it on my head or helmet. However for anything else it just takes trial and error. I suppose if you also have some good editing software, it'd be a lot easier to create your idea of finished film.
The audio comes in decent even with the impact cover over the camera. I was surprised at the quality of the sound. The GoPro Silver comes with two high impact holders; one is water proof and used for diving. The other is used for all other outdoor activities. It has a large slot in the back of the holder and picks up sound well. The battery life could be better. Mine seems to last about 35 to 50 minutes. When it gets low, I plug it into my pick-up lighter charger and I'm up and running in fifteen to twenty minutes. It comes with a cigarette lighter 12 Volt charger as well as a USB charger. On the upside there is a lot that I like about the camera. It's very light and compact. This makes it handy when it's being worn on a helmet while your outdoor adventures and need your hands. It's also very durable. It comes in a well built holder / protective case. I have dropped mine a few times and it just keeps on working. It also comes with the diving case and it's water proof down to 197 feet.

I am by no means a camera buff. By that I mean I don't know much about cameras or photography. So the GoPro Silver Action Camera has been a brand new experience for me. I was able to figure it out fairly fast. I did have to download updates right off the bat. Once the camera was updated I purchased a head strap so I could secure the camera to my head without having to worry about dropping it. It come with several basic brackets as well. Once I made a few short film clips, I just plugged it into my PC using the USB cable. The digital clips uploaded in a short amount of time. I have made several short clips and I am happy with the results. My next purchase will be some decent editing software (filmware). The GoPro's are a little expensive. I purchased this model nearly a year ago 12FEB2013. Since then GoPro has made some major improvements on the Silver model. For now I am happy with this model. However I'm certain than when I get my projects rolling and some good filmware, I will be looking at the GoPro Hero 3+ Silver. They also offer a GoPro Black for the very serious adventurer and is quite a bit more money. I am having fun with mine! Watch out George Lucas!
