Cons: Though I really have to wonder about the Sting match.......
The Bottom Line: Although there is a questionable choice in the Sting/Flair match, the DVD overall delivers some classifc Flair matches and is worth the price for any Flair fan.
malkura's Full Review: Ultimate Ric Flair Collection
Plot Details: This opinion reveals no details about the movie''s plot.
I got this for Christmas of last year. Don't ask what took so long to review this, but now I am. The Definitive Collection was somewhat of a dissapointment, is this one better? I'd say.
Disk 1:
Ric Flair vs Harley Race Cage Match-Starcade 83
This was a very, very good match. It's a much slower, more basic kind of match. No real flare(no punt intended) to it, just about half an hour of solid back and forth wrestling with some blood thrown in. Even though this match is the slowest on the disk, it works well. Though you have to be in the mood for a slower match.
Ric Flair vs Dusty Rhodes-Starcade 85
Pretty good match. Not really great by any stretch, but watching these guys go for over half an hour is more entertaining then watching certain people go that time. This is probably the best match you can find between these two.
Ric Flair vs Berry Windham
An excellent match, unquesitonably the best match on this disk. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest examples of "putting someone over" (making them look good) I've seen. It's a shame Windham never got his due, he really did well to hang with Flair in the ring.
Disk 2:
Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat 2/3 Falls-Clash of the Champions VI
Absolutely phenomenal match. The best match on the entire DVD set and arguably one of the greatest matches of all time. For close to 60 minutes these two never fail to entertain. Sure there are rest holds but no spots that make you fast forward. Every move has a point, and Funk and JR made a good commentary team. Incredible and worth the price of the DVD alone.
Rick Flair vs Ricky Steamboat Wrestle War 89
Many call this the greatest match of all time. Personally, I think the 2/3 Falls was the better match. However that's no strike against this match. These two manage to tell a very different story from their last match and for close to an hour keep you enthralled. Another excellent match.
Rick Flair vs Terry Funk I Quit-Clash of the Champions IX
If you aren't familiar with the Funk/Flair series, you might be surprised to find these is little to no technical wrestling here, instead just a back and forth brawl. Well it works. These two know that above all else, pacing and storytelling can make a brawl great and that's what we see here. A very good, solid match. Also see their match at "Great American bash", which despite being very different, I find to be on par with this match.
I should note that unlike the other 2 disks, these matches are all connected to one another via storyline. Interesting.
Disk 3:
Ric Flair Wins the 1992 Royal Rumble
This is a great performance by Flair. We have guys going in and winning at Number 1 and 2 reguarly, but back in 92 no one did that, a fact Gorilla Monsoon attests to. Of course Flair was used to working 60 minute matches, so this wasn't nearly as hard for him as he makes it appear. He fights with and put's over every wrestler in the match(except dibiase who's eliminated before he enters) Every wrestler deserves at least a little credit for making this Rumble exciting. A real plus is the commentary from Heenan and Monsoon, who make a hillarious duo on commentary.
Ric Flair vs Sting-Clash of the Champions XXII
What the hell is this? I mean I can understand them wanting to save their classic match at the first Clash for the Definitive Collection, but they couldn't have chosen a better match from them? Like their GAB match in 1990 among so many others? This match really looks pathetic compared to all the other matches on the DVD. It's Flair and Sting so it's not terrible, but it's not a good match either. Boring and uninspired, do yourself a favor and skip over this one.
Ric Flair vs HHH-Raw 2003
We now jump to 2003, where, let's face it, Flair isn't half the wrestler he used to be. However Flair, with the right opponent, could still put on a very good match and this is an example. Miles better then the Sting/Flair match earlier, this is the shortest match on the DVD and while it can't hold a candle to some of the others, as far as matches in general go this one keeps you interested throughout.
