Pros: Easy to use, makes for a great gift, three reusable corks.
Cons: Some people won't pump it enough.
I have had a couple of Penguin and VacuVin wine pumps and loved having the ability to recork them to preserve the taste. The corks that come with this are rubber and create a solid seal to prevent air from getting inside the bottle once the air has been pumped out. Not only are these great to give as gifts, they are something that you can take with you if you are hitting a B.Y.O.B. event. It's small enough that it fits in a bag or purse but you might get some strange looks from those sitting around you when you whip it out and start pumping.
The premise of the 'wine preserver' as it is listed here is simple. Once you remove the cork the clock is ticking in regards to the overall taste of your wine. If you are drinking homemade wine and it came with a screw-top lid get rid of it and use one of the rubber corks that comes with this set. Just push the 'cork' into the bottle then place the pump over it and start pulling back on the handle. Five or six pumps is usually enough to remove the air; when it becomes hard to pull back on the handle you know the air has been removed. The less wine in the bottle, the more you have to pump.
It's easy to use and you can buy replacement corks separately; the basic version shown here sells for about ten dollars and can be purchased at wine or spirit stores as well as online. I still have this but it's got a crack in it; it still works but it doesn't look all that great so it's reserved for home use only. The only thing that I'd do to improve the design of this is to add a textured grip to the body of it so you can handle it a little easier when your hands are wet.
This is the basic version; there are nicer looking sets that you can get but if all you want is a way to preserve the taste of your wine, this will worth without fail. Depending on how often you're uncorking the bottles, the provided rubber corks will last about nine to twelve months. The replacements are sold in a three pack for about six dollars. The nicest things is the corks are compatible with almost all of the VacuVin pumps so if you upgrade to another pump you can still make use of the rubber corks.
